The verifying of “Grief” by icedcave

April 14, 2025

Here’s a breakdown of GRIEF — the (very) infamous level in Geometry Dash — and what it means that Doggie is “verifying” it.

🎯 What is “GRIEF”

GRIEF is an upcoming “Extreme Demon” mega-collaboration level in Geometry Dash.

It was created by icedcave.

The level uses the song Stalemate by KzX.

Visually / thematically, GRIEF adopts a “hell-themed” style — with dark art, crosses/pentagrams, ominous decoration.

In terms of gameplay: GRIEF is extremely long (XL length: ~2 min 46 s) and brutally difficult. It demands tight timing, speed, and mastery across multiple gameplay segments (wave, cube, ship, gravity changes, etc.).

Many in the GD community regard it as one of the hardest (if not the hardest) custom levels attempted.

✅ What Does “Verifying” a Level Mean — and What Doggie Is Doing

In Geometry Dash lingo, “verifying” a level means the first legitimate 100% completion (or full completion under the verification rules) — i.e. the level is beaten under fair conditions, without hacks or cheats. That first successful run establishes the level’s validity and opens the door for it to gain status (like being added to official “demon-difficulty” or community hardest-list rankings).

For GRIEF:

Doggie is the designated verifier of grief.

As of the latest info, Doggie’s best recorded run is 83%.

There is a complicated story behind verification: at one point Doggie used a mod (called “CBF” — Click-Between-Frames) to help reduce input delay caused by changes to the game’s physics, which made the level easier to “bot-proof” but controversial among some in the community.

Because GRIEF uses that mod for verification, it becomes ineligible for an official “rating” (and thus can’t be listed on some “official hardest level” lists) — unless a re-verification without the mod happens or the game officially supports the mod.

The community around GD is actively debating whether GRIEF will ever get that rating, or whether a “Rated+” or alternate classification will be used.

⚠️ Why GRIEF and Its Verification Are Controversial / Important

The difficulty: GRIEF isn’t just “hard” — it’s brutal. Many consider it among the hardest custom levels ever built in GD. That means verifying it becomes a huge milestone, not only for the verifier but for the community.

The mod / fairness debate: Because Doggie used a mod (CBF) to mitigate input-delay after a game update, some argue it gives an unfair advantage (or at least disqualifies the run from “official” status). That fuels ongoing community debate about what counts as a legitimate verification.

High expectations: Because GRIEF comes from a creator with a legacy (icEDcave) — and because of its ambitious scope, art style, and challenge — verifying it would be a major event in the community.

The Hardest Geometry Dash Demons Over Time

April 2, 2025

Geometry Dash, a rhythm-based platformer created by RobTop Games, is widely recognized for its fast-paced gameplay and precise timing. While many players enjoy its official levels, the heart of the game's challenge lies within its Demon difficulty category—specifically the Extreme Demons, the hardest levels ever made by the community. These levels test not only a player's skill and patience but also the limits of what the game engine can handle. Understanding these levels provides insight into the evolution of player ability, game design, and community competition.

What Makes a Level a Hard Demon?

A Demon level is classified by its intense difficulty, but Extreme Demons take this concept much further. These levels often require frame-perfect inputs, meaning a player must click at precise fractions of a second. Many include extremely tight spaces, fast-paced wave or ship sections, and gameplay that demands complete memorization. Unlike official levels, which are polished and designed with broad audiences in mind, Extreme Demons are created to challenge the very best players in the world.

Length also plays a huge role. Most Extreme Demons are one to two minutes long—without checkpoints. Even a single mistake sends the player back to the beginning, making consistency as important as skill.

The Role of the Demon List

The Geometry Dash Demon List ranks the hardest levels based on difficulty and player completions. Maintained by a dedicated team, it helps track which levels are objectively the toughest at any given time. When a level is verified—meaning a player has beaten it legitimately—the Demon List staff analyze it and assign a position. This ranking system drives friendly competition among players and pushes creators to design even more challenging levels.

Iconic Hardest Levels

Throughout the game's history, several Extreme Demons have stood out for their unprecedented challenge:

Tartarus

“Tartarus” became a symbol of difficulty after its release. Known for incredibly tight timings and demanding ship control, it dominated the top of the Demon List for a long time. Its legacy comes not only from its difficulty but from the many months it took players to master it.

Acheron

“Acheron” is considered one of the hardest wave-focused levels ever made. Its gameplay requires flawless precision, and even experienced players must practice thousands of attempts before achieving a smooth run. The level’s rapid pace and microscopic wave corridors make it notorious.

Slaughterhouse

“Slaughterhouse” is famous for its extreme speed and uniquely stressful ship sections. Its verification sparked huge community attention because of how absurdly difficult it was considered at the time. It stood as one of the most challenging levels due to its extremely tight movement requirements.

Firework

“Firework” combines artistic visuals with demanding gameplay. Its intricately decorated sequences hide some of the toughest timings in the entire game. The level is admired not only for its difficulty but for its beautiful, polished design—proving that Extreme Demons can be both visually impressive and mechanically punishing.

The Golden

“The Golden” is known for its length and stamina requirements. This level contains several infamous choke points, making consistency extremely difficult. Even players who can repeatedly reach the final sections often fail near the end, creating enormous psychological pressure.

Why Players Attempt Extreme Demons

The appeal of these levels goes beyond bragging rights. Many players chase Extreme Demons to:

Prove personal skill and discipline

Gain recognition within the community

Create content for YouTube or Twitch

Participate in a competitive global ranking system

Experience the satisfaction of conquering something nearly impossible

For many, beating an Extreme Demon is equivalent to mastering a piece of art—an accomplishment that feels almost monumental.

Impact on the Community

Extreme Demons helped shape Geometry Dash into what it is today. They inspire innovative gameplay concepts, push creators to experiment with new mechanics, and fuel competition across the world. The rise of difficult levels has also encouraged collaboration between creators, verifiers, and testers, forming one of the most dedicated and passionate communities in gaming.

Conclusion

The hardest Geometry Dash Demons represent the height of challenge within the game. Levels like Tartarus, Acheron, Slaughterhouse, Firework, and The Golden symbolize not just difficulty, but the creativity and determination of the community. These Extreme Demons push players to their limits, inspire new generations of creators, and continue to redefine what is possible within Geometry Dash. As the game evolves, one thing is certain: players will always seek the next impossible challenge.
